DAD

When most people look down and see a penny they probably just walk away. In our family, even the little ones we stop in our tracks, pick it up and say "love you too".  We feel like my dad is sending them from heaven for us.
When the kids were little they loved to sit with him in his chair. He liked to believe he was a great singer and 'Pennies from Heaven' was one of his favorites.

The Christmas of 2006 Tom and I along with Thomas, Natalie and Ella went to spend Christmas with him in Ohio. He was lonely since it was just the second Christmas that my mother had been gone. He sang to Ella too.
January 16th I went back to Ohio to be with him while he some minor surgery to relieve a small clot in his leg. During the procedure his esophagus was torn and one bad thing happened after another

Robert Jarvis Penney 76 years
On Easter we all gathered to celebrate his life and on April 17th he left us to be to be in a greater place. We miss him but know that we will see him again. In the mean time keep those pennies coming.

Peer Pressure

Last week the Baltimore Ravens won the Super Bowl. Living near Baltimore, you would think we would be excited. Being raised near Cleveland you would know we were not.
I'm not not sure why professional sports bother me so much. I know I am a poor looser so I don't like to compete at many things. Maybe if Cleveland had better sports teams I would feel different but I don't think so, The Browns, Indians and Cavs have all been good at some point.I just think we spend too much time, emotion and money on watching someone play a game. My opinion I know, most don't agree and that's okay. My dad had season tickets in the Dawg Pound at Cleveland Stadium and when he died Charlie used the money we gave him from what my dad left us to get himself season tickets for that year. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan just not a fanatic and I was happy for them.
My problem comes in when other people push their obsession off on me. We don't need to be woken up at 11:30 at night with yelling, screaming and fireworks. I'm pretty sure the neighborhood wouldn't be too happy with me for celebrating anything else that way. Why is it ok to show up to work in a jersey when in the same office it's not acceptable to even wear jeans? Sami at 3 in a paid pre school schouldn't have her learning time taken away with Raven fever. Nor should any of our kids be peer pressured. Ella and Jack are confused about where their loyalties should lie. They know we all support our Ohio teams because we are proud of where we come from but they are being shown in school that they should support a different team. They shouldn't feel like they have to choose between their family and school over a sports team. Don't get me started on what they aren't allowed to talk about at school.

In the 80's we were stationed at Ft. Carson in Colorado. We were lucky (?) enough to be there when the Denver Broncos went to the Super Bowl, two times. The same obsessions were going on then. The only problem, we were raised Browns fans and were raising our children as Browns fans. Fun Right? Wrong. Bronco or orange and blue day at school may not seem like much but when you have little  money and your 9 year old is under peer pressure from everyone in the school including the adults you do what it takes to get him that Elway jersey. In the years to come I even appliqued a jacket for him because we couldn't afford what everyone else had. His John Elway obsession went into adulthood and the whole family (Browns fans included) supported him. I get pains in my stomach to this day remembering how much I wanted to buy him all those Bronco things and couldn't. Talk about peer pressure, I was the one who crumbled to it, more for my child than I would ever have for myself.

My son in law is returning home from a tour in Afghanistan tonight. Do you think they'll shut the city down and throw him a parade? They've already seen their fireworks and I'm pretty sure there will be people screaming and crying and throwing parties though. Welcome back, Shawn. Thank You, we love you.

Bless Us O Lord

Grandpa Bob leading the blessing at Jen & Shawn's wedding
I was raised Catholic and before meals we would recite a blessing together. As we raised our kids we did the same for them. When we would visit anyone in my family they would also say the same prayer.
When we would visit my parents my dad added a quick "dig in!" right after Amen. The kids would try to beat him to it. Such a simple thing that left such lasting memories that when Jennifer got married she asked Grandpa Bob to lead the prayer. People outside the family thought we had practiced just for the wedding.
Yesterday I started to well up when the kids were here and I noticed that most of them know our prayer and all of them threw in the "dig in!" They know Grandpa Bob even though they never  met him. Thanks for the memories Dad. I wonder what the kids will remember about me.

Bless us O Lord and these thy gifts which we are about to receive
From thy bounty through Christ our Lord. Amen
Dig In!

A Forward from My Dad

Great Grandpa Bob & Ella October 2004
My dad has been gone for almost five years now. I was going through my Email account deleting old Emails and came across a forward from him from 2004. He loved forwards and as irritating as they can be when they came from him I always read them. I knew he thought about me when he sent them and there are still times when I get a forward and think "Dad would love this one". This one was one of my favorites. I won't delete it.

Subject: Fw: A carrot, an egg and a cup of coffee...
Thought you would enjoy this- A Carrot, An Egg and a Cup of Coffee
This was too good of a life lesson not to pass on! A carrot, an egg and a cup of coffee... You will never look at a cup of coffee the same way again.

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose. Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil, without saying a word. In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl.
Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me, what do you see?" "Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied. Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard boiled egg. Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then asked, "What does it mean, mother?"
Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity... boiling water. Each reacted differently.
The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water,it softened and became weak.
The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened.
The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.
"Which are you?" she asked her daughter. "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?"
Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength? Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart? Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you.
When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you elevate yourself to another level? How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

Father's Day Camping

We planned a camping trip to Gettysburg for Father's Day. Before the hour and a half drive though we had to take our daily walk with Samantha.
We set up our cabin first and then moved on to setting up the two tents.

2 year old cousin + 3 year old cousin=
TROUBLEI haven't seen a teeter totter in YEARSThe wagon was a life saver since the tent sights weren't as close to the cabin as the campground led us to believe.Lily was walking all over the place"Tag Grams, you're it!""Please Uncle Tommy, cook me a hot dog."Ghost stories, kindaMy dad loved jokes and he would tell them to the kids when they were too small to get them. One of his favorites was "The night was dark and stormy and all the kids were sitting around the campfire and the captain said (insert name) tell us a story and the captain said the night was dark and stormy and all the kids were sitting around the campfire and the captain said (insert name) tell us a story . . ." ELLA GOT IT THIS TIME!Daddy, tell me a storyElla was so excited to give Tom his gift that they gave it to him Saturday morning.
"It's an Iphone Papa, let me show you how to use it.""Maybe Daddy should show you how to use it"I love to see a daddy brush out his little girl's hair. Sounds sexist, I know but it's so sweet.
Jack brought his daddy up to the cabin for a shower.
Ella wanted to give her daddy his gift too. It was a book with photos that her, Sami and Mommy had printed. They loved shoveling, go figureLove the wagon!BUBBLES!"Grams, wait for me!"Jennifer made Thing 1 shirts and Thing 2 dresses for the three sets of little ones.Cousins, it makes me smile.Frisbees, another big hitbasketballShawn beat another camper dad in Corn Hole, they all played horseshoes too.
Tom also got an award for the dad having the biggest family there. Then there was swimming!Thomas and his girlsWorn out! We still had camping to do thoughWe didn't rough it too much. They even had satellite TV but the signal was horrible so we didn't watch anything."Uncle Tommy, get up"Shawn was in charge of stoking up the fireWe're always struggling with Sami to keep her shoes onNo Lily, that's Mountain Dew is for Grams.Peek A BooThen Thomas brought out the guitar.Ohhh SamiMarshmallows!Even Lily had a marshmallow. so back into the wagon and back to the cabin for a bathS'mores timeUncle Tommmmmy!SPARKLERSElla didn't sleep well in the tent Friday so her and Sami stayed at the cabin with us.Happy Fathers Day!I made everyone waffles and bacon for breakfastDo these kids look tired or what! We never even made it to the battlefields. Next time.I had Jennifer make all these Cleveland Indians shirts with the embroidery machine. We call all the kids our Sweeties and Ella always let's everyone know that she was the first sweetie so I had Jen put SWEETIE and their birth order number on the back. Here he is with #4 (Sami),#1 (Ella), #5(Lily) and #2(Jack). Our number #3(Wyatt) and #6(Piper) were in Ohio. We missed you guys.
